The Spix’s Macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii), also known as the Little Blue Macaw, is one of the world’s most famous and rarest parrot species. This stunning bird gained worldwide recognition as the inspiration for the animated film Rio.

Physical Description

• Size: 55-57 cm (21.5-23.5 inches) in length

• Weight: Approximately 300-360 grams (10.5-12.6 oz)

• Coloring: Soft blue plumage with a greyish head, darker blue back and wings, and a black beak

• Distinctive Features: Grey facial skin, yellow eyes (adults), and black sturdy bill

Temperament & Personality

The Spix’s Macaw is known for its gentle, shy, and intelligent nature. They form strong, lifelong pair bonds and are highly social birds. Their call is described as a resonant “kra-ark” or “cra-á” sound, which is quieter and more wavering than that of larger macaws like the Hyacinth Macaw.

Lifespan

In captivity, Spix’s Macaws can live 20-30 years, with some individuals reaching up to 33 years under optimal care.
